As someone whose business is understanding energy choices and consequences, I know that electricity costs will continue to rise in real terms, and this rise will be accelerated as utilities are obliged to account for the carbon and other greenhouse gases produced by burning coal and gas. The remedy or first resort for consumers should be more efficient homes and appliances. I was happy to pay the modest premium to purchase my Hallowell advanced heat pump. I know I will recoup the dollar cost well within the expected equipment lifetime; and I am reducing my contribution to the greenhouse gas emissions that are threatening environmental values I care deeply about. The clincher for me was understanding that “advanced” didn’t mean “unproven”; that the Hallowell heat pump simply has conventional, reliable, off-the-shelf components in an ingenious and advanced design.
